Vestry Laight Issues Report & Recommendations to Further USA Weightlifting's Efforts in Advancing Athlete Safety and Building an Inclusive Culture

Following a comprehensive assessment of USA Weightlifting’s culture, Vestry Laight issued a report November 18, 2021, outlining recommendations in key areas to help ensure the safety of its athletes and continue to build a culture that is welcoming to everyone. In addition to focusing on USA Weightlifting’s culture from a DEI perspective, the evaluation also examined USAW's handling of a high-profile U.S. Center for SafeSport case from 2017.

Vestry Laight partners Sara Darehshori, Brande Stellings and Silda Palerm interviewed 130 individuals from all corners of the weightlifting world, as well as experts from around the globe, to develop impactful and sustainable recommendations to make USAW a leader in inclusion and athlete safety. Our recommendations provide a roadmap identifying strategic priorities in the areas of athlete safety, coaching, social media and leveraging newly configured Weightlifting State Organizations.

Vestry Laight appreciates USA Weightlifting’s commitment to continued introspection to make the sport as safe and welcoming as it can be.  The participation of leadership and members of the weightlifting community provided critical insight into the culture and a path for actionable recommendations based on strategic priorities.  We believe this approach will have the most impact towards advancing athlete safety and building an inclusive culture for all.
